Of course, in the post-Civil War years, General and then-President Ulysses S. Grant was virtually the last person for whom Atlanta's establishment would name a park. Local engineer and businessman Lemuel P. Grant donated 100 acres in 1882, and Atlanta city government soon added another 44 acres.

This neighborhood association is grassroots to the point of collecting funds for ailing neighbors, and selling Grant Park motor vehicle decals for $1 apiece. Members also maintain a crime watch in which they share information with police authorities.

Community events take place on many warm-weather weekends. Home tours are hosted in both October and December, the latter accompanied by an artists' market.
